The Fairtrade Standard for Gold

Gold certified to Fairtrade Standards provides better living and working conditions for artisanal & small-scale miners (ASM) and their communities in developing countries

Fairtrade Gold Bar

Fairtrade is a product seal that is already well known from food items such as coffee or chocolate. The Fairtrade product seal certifies gold and silver from responsible artisanal & small-scale mining organizations.  The objective is to bring about positive change to small-scale mining, promote sustainable social-economic development, ensure environmental protection, and give everyone access to responsibly mined gold.

The Fairtrade certification system is secured by independent, accredited auditing organizations such as FLOCERT. This ensures that the mining organizations comply with the requirements of the Fairtrade Standard. The entire supply chain is audited, which includes all companies working with and making claims about Fairtrade Gold and Fairtrade Silver, from the mine to the finished piece of jewelry.

Benefits for Mining Communities

  • A guaranteed minimum price of 95 % of the London Bullion Market price for gold and silver (Fairever even pays 97 % to 99 %!)
  • A premium for better living and working conditions and community development
  • Investment in organizational and social development and environmental protection

Origin of Gold

We are currently sourcing Fairtrade gold from the mining organizations CECOMSAP and SOTRAMI in Peru.

Under the umbrella organization CECOMSAP, 10 mining cooperatives have joined forces. CECOMSAP is located in the district of Ananea in the province of Puno, about 4,700 meters above sea level. The area is characterized by cold and snowy weather with temperatures ranging between -10 °C to +10 °C.

SOTRAMI is located in the Atacama desert and became in 2011 the very first Fairtrade certified mine in Peru.
